Goals and Purpose

The Association of Coastal Engineers is a professional organization dedicated to the advancement of excellence in education, research, and the practice of coastal engineering. The Association recognizes Coastal Engineering as the skills, knowledge, expertise, and theory associated with purposeful engineering intervention in the coastal system. Coastal engineering is the study of the processes ongoing at the shoreline and construction within the coastal zone. It involves the practice of nearshore oceanography, marine geology, and civil engineering, often directed at combating erosion of coasts or providing navigational access.

Major Initiatives

  1. Coastal Engineering Certification – Continue working with ASCE’s Coastal, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute to implement the Coastal Engineering Certification procedures.  This effort will require financial and non-financial contributions from the ACE membership.
  2. Developing Best Management Practices – To assist development of the appropriate skills, knowledge, expertise, and theory associated with purposeful engineering intervention in the coastal system, ACE is committed to developing “best management practices”.  As developed, descriptions of the best management practices will be provided on the ACE website.
  3. Continuing Education – In addition to the development of best management practices, ACE is committed to providing continuing education through short courses and annual meetings.  The most recent short course sponsored by ACE was entitled “Application of Coastal Engineering in Coastal Zone Management” and was taught at the 2005 Solutions to Coastal Disasters Conference.  At various annual meetings, ACE has sponsored technical sessions, where experts have provided in-depth presentations (typically 45-90 minutes) on a range of subjects pertinent to the practicing coastal engineer.  ACE will continue to provide educational opportunities and are working towards co-sponsoring an upcoming conference.
  4. Developing Website as a Resource for Coastal Engineers – During 2008/2009, the ACE Board of Directors has been developing an upgraded website to serve the coastal engineering community.  The website is aimed at providing both technical and business-related information regarding the coastal engineering community.  It is anticipated that ACE will maintain the volunteer resources needed to ensure that the site continues to provide up-to-date information
